Training in Maternal Medicine for Obstetricians

The role of the Obstetrician is to bring their Obstetric skills to the management of women with medical co-morbidities in pregnancy to ensure a global management plan ensuring medical, obstetric and fetal issues are addressed. All Obstetricians will have some experience in General Medicine gained prior to training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The Core Curriculum in Obstetric training includes general experience in patients with co-morbidities in pregnancy together with opportunities to gain specific experience from involvement with specialist combined clinics.

Obstetric trainees who wish to develop a more detailed knowledge can choose suitable modules in Pregnancy Care and/or Maternal Medicine in the new Specialist Interest Training during their ST5-ST7 years in the programme. The proposals for these modules can be found on the RCOG website and are in the process of ratification with the GMC for implementation by August 2024.

For Obstetricians who want to lead Maternal Medicine Centres and Networks there is also the opportunity to progress to Subspecialty Training in Fetal and Maternal Medicine, the syllabus for which is also available on the RCOG website.

All these options will be supported in the East Midlands.

East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network (EMMMN) is at the forefront of promoting education among doctors by pioneering multidisciplinary teaching sessions on a regional scale. Recognising the complexity and importance of maternal medicine, the network aims to take a proactive approach to ensure that healthcare professionals receive comprehensive training and stay updated on the latest developments in the field. These teaching sessions will bring together experts from various medical disciplines to provide a holistic understanding of maternal medicine, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among doctors.

Furthermore, the network has plans to actively encourage doctors to engage in the learning process by inviting them to present intriguing and challenging cases related to different maternal medicine topics. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration, EMMMN will enhance the quality of care provided to expectant mothers and will contribute to the advancement of maternal medicine.
